Le Loop 2018 - Stage 6: Brest - Mur de Bretagne Guerlédan
I remember 2015 quite vividly the climb and approach to the Mur de Bretagne and the small gang of us hitting the climb; and at one level that provided re-assurance before today’s start; ironically I think the start point that day was Fougeres; tomorrow’s start point.
As we started in Brest this morning, in mist and misty rain, everyone seemed to get their head down and just ride..... shortly after the Cat 3 climb and with a ridge in the road, pop went my tyre, I wasn’t alone but there was no consolation in that! So new inner tube, 35km plus to next feed stop.... off I go, pushing perhaps slightly harder than I should cresting a hill.... I came slowly to a stop having descended to a large herd of cows crossing the road; what the farmer will do next week could make for interesting Tour tv!! The Cat 4 climb was dreamy, right gradient, new tour tarmac..... and onto FS2. Setting off in a group from FS2, puncture for no apparent reason, same wheel!!
And onwards to the Tour, for me, watching the last 30 km of this stage will be fascinating; today I absolutely felt the GC on the tour could be settled in Brittany and as we passed through a village with statues of famous Bretons, including Hinault; one wonders whether this is the story of these 6 stages.... crafted through flat and hard, a Tour flat, a fascinating TTT, an out and back to the coast, the Breton version of Liege Bastogne Liege and the Mur de Bretagne x 5, only two of them are the proper climb but there’s some proper dinky climbs- yes the pros will eat them but I think they’ll cause indigestion!
It’s hard to believe we are six stages in!
