Cape Epic - Stage 1
A Tough day at the office!!
Being woken to the sound of bagpipes just after 5 am.... an interesting way to start the day; so we head to the start line- bikes cleaned and lubbed after yesterday- wearing Storey RT kit- kindly donated for this race.....
A quick start on a gradually climbing course.... BUT a washout on sand saw me break my “prescription” cycling glasses followed a few km later by a shredded side wall... puncture repair on the side of a hill- you are your own mechanics out here; then riding sensibly until the next service point... new tyre!!
And off we go again.... through the Land Rover technical zone- working hard; an opportunity to get my glasses sorted at the next food/service stop then up through Skullkrans (the highest point of the day) a long hard climb..... a tough rocky descent with a crash and a controlled stop shortly after; and then the pull back to the finish.... sections of pleasure followed by graft.
The earlier puncture massively slowed us down and the minor niggles certainly took their toll; sadly our ride time has to take account of the stops- but moments of real fun and laughter out on course; my favourite being when Verity ( who rode well through the day- awesome to watch) absolutely chicked a male team- I think it was the ease with which she rode past, but their subsequent effort to go past her was fun to watch!!
There is no doubt this is tough; and some of the stories/rides more difficult than ours; and on a day where the pros struggled... good to finish and having had time to reflect; good to be here.... Stage 2 in the morning!
